2024 will be a new challenge for international students studying in Canada. The Canadian government has published a new set of rules for overseas students with few updates for study permits. Two significant changes are hiking up the maintenance fees and extending off-campus work permits for students to a specific period.
Extending 40 hours off-campus work permit limit for students
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has declared that, with the notable exception of scheduled academic breaks, they will continue a policy that permits some international students to work more than the standard 20 hours per week set for off-campus employment.
Canada’s immigration service introduced a temporary regulation in 2022 that let some overseas students seek full-time (40 hours per week) jobs off-campus in response to the country’s rising labour need.
Increased maintenance fees for international student visa
Marc Miller, Immigration minister – stated that prospective overseas students will have to demonstrate that they can pay for tuition and travel, as well as $20,635, in addition to the $10,000 requirement that has been in place for the past 20 years, starting next year in 2024.
He threatened to restrict visas for provinces that refuse to assist with student housing or close educational facilities that, in his opinion, shouldn’t be in operation.
It is unclear if this additional maintenance fee increase is also required for an on-shore student visa extension. The standard is to show the living costs for the rest of the study period and due tuition fees during the study permit extension.
What impact will this have on applications and current students?
The revised minimal funding requirements will only apply to new applications for study permits submitted on or after January 1, 2024. More specifically, those who applied for a study permit extension or new study permit from December 7, 2023, will not be eligible for 40 hours of work permit limits.
